Finding a Teaching Job | Hot Jobs – Career Search – JobMonkey
Today’s job market is tough, making it difficult to get any industry, even teaching. If you’ve recently graduated from an education program and are having trouble finding a job, you’re not alone. Here are five tips you can use to find a teaching job and get hired:
Tip #1: Look the part. Many schools don’t limit you by asking employees to cover tattoos or cut long hair (for guys), but these things might work against you in a job interview. Individuality is cool, but there’s a time and a place for it. To get hired in a teaching position, make sure you look like a clean-cut role model.
Tip #2: Network with teachers. During your time in college, you probably worked with at least too or three teachers as a student-teacher. Now’s the time to email or call them for some help. Often, teachers hear about positions before they’re posted, so make it known to them that you’re job hunting and would appreciate leads.
Tip #3: Get an advanced degree. While you can start working as a teach with just a bachelor’s degree, getting your master’s degree in education or your specific field definitely gives you the edge on other candidates. As a bonus, while you’re getting your master’s degree, you can also have you student loans deferred, so you don’t have to repay them until after you graduate.
Tip #4: Be location-flexible. Jobs are always more plentiful in certain areas than in other areas. In general, inner city schools need teachers more often, so by being flexible with your location can help you find a job. For a few years, you might have to travel to get to work or live outside of your preferred area, but this experience makes it easier to find the job you want in the future. Don’t forget that you can also apply to online schools to be a virtual teacher.
Tip #5: Build your resume. Just because you’re not working as a teacher doesn’t mean that you can’t build your resume. Volunteer at after-school programs in your area, sign up for local substitution lists, or become a private tutor. The stronger your resume, the easier it is to find a job as a teacher.

Graduate Spotlight: Justin Mosley | Grantham University
Graduate Spotlight: Justin Mosley
Iowa native, Technical Sergeant Justin Mosley, graduated from Warsaw High School in Warsaw, Illinois, with an athletic scholarship offer to a state university. TSgt. Mosley declined the scholarship, and instead, decided to serve his country by joining the United States Air Force. While some may think that he didn’t make the right choice, his decision did not negatively impact his educational goals. “I decided to get a degree early in my military career so I would set myself up for success in the future,” said TSgt. Mosley. With that, he took advantage of the military friendliness and flexibility of Grantham’s 100% online degree programs. “I chose Grantham University because of its flexibility with working with students,” he commented. “Online learning was a big bonus for me, because I tend to perform better if I can set my own pace.”
TSgt. Mosley is currently stationed at RAF Feltwell, United Kingdom, working as an Airman Leadership School instructor. The flexibility of Grantham’s learning platform allowed him to continue what he loves, traveling to and learning about historic places in Europe.
While perusing his undergraduate degree in Information Systems at Grantham, TSgt. Mosley was able to utilize some of his credits from Grantham to achieve two degrees from the Community College of the Air Force. These achievements open the door for future promotions in the Air Force. But, his greatest accomplishment of all is completing his bachelor’s degree online by himself. “Online learning requires discipline and self-motivation and can tell you a great deal about the type of person you are and what you can achieve on your own,” said TSgt. Mosley. “The thing I enjoyed most about distance learning is that I learned more about myself than I would have in a classroom environment.”
TSgt. Mosley completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Information Systems in July 2010, and he now plans to pursue a Master of Business Administration degree. By continuing his education, TSgt. Mosley is setting a superb example for his family; wife Mary Jo, daughter Olivia, 3 years old, and son Erik, 1 year old. Research shows that children of college graduates are much more likely to graduate high school, go to college, and have better health and longer life expectancy.
It took TSgt. Mosley six years to earn his bachelor’s degree, but, even though it was a long road with some hardships along the way, he just kept going. His advice to others who are thinking about going back to school is “never give up on your degree” and “after you complete one class, enroll in the next; don’t let time slip by.” TSgt. Mosley feels that “getting your degree is an honor that most people will never have an opportunity to do.”
Congratulations, TSgt. Mosley. We are excited to hear about the amazing accomplishments you achieve during your journey to receiving your master’s degree.

Tribal Colleges And Universities | Article Pick Today Directory
p>Tribal colleges and universities are unique American institutions that offer opportunities for Native Americans to pursue higher education within their own cultural and regional contexts. Generally located on or near Indian reservations, tribal colleges and universities (also referred to as tribally controlled colleges) aim to preserve and communicate traditional native culture, provide higher education and career or technical opportunities to tribal members, enhance economic opportunities within the reservation community, and promote tribal self-determination.
In 1968 Dine, Inc., an organization established by Native American political and education leaders, founded Navajo Community College (later renamed Dine College). This was the first tribal college to be created on an American Indian reservation. Since then the number of tribal colleges has increased steadily in the United States. As of 2001, thirty-two tribal colleges have emerged, created by American Indians tribes for American Indians. These colleges are located in areas with large concentrations of Native Americans, principally in the upper Midwest, the Pacific Northwest, and the Southwest.
There are seven tribal colleges in Montana, five in North Dakota, four in South Dakota, three in Minnesota, three in New Mexico, two each in Michigan, Nebraska, and Wisconsin, and one each in Arizona, California, Kansas, and Washington. Inclusive of these, two new colleges in Michigan and Minnesota were added in 2001, highlighting the steady growth that tribal colleges continue to experience in their relatively short history. Among these tribal colleges and universities, twenty-four are community colleges and offer the associate’s degree and technical and vocational certificates, six offer the bachelor’s degree, and two offer the master’s degree. In light of the tribes’ federal sovereign status, however, tribal colleges and universities receive little or no state funds. Thus, they are primarily dependent on federal assistance for their core operating expenses through oversight by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
Students and Faculty
The majority of tribal colleges and universities are located on isolated Indian reservations. As a result, most of them have small enrollments, often less than 1,000 students. While smaller classes enable these tribal colleges to offer more individualized instruction, they also struggle with limited resources in part due to their smaller enrollments. As of 1994 tribal colleges served approximately 15,000 full-and part-time students according to the National Center for Education Statistics. The average age of tribal college students has become younger in recent years, from thirty years of age down to twenty-seven, as students are choosing with greater frequency to enroll directly in a tribal college after graduation from high school. The majority of students are more likely to come from families with lower levels of educational attainment and thus be first-generation college students. Many students also receive some form of federal financial aid.
The modal profile of the typical tribal college student, however, is a single mother with young children, living below the poverty level and often dependent on welfare or her extended family for support. This typical student attends part-time, and is academically underprepared for college, thus in need of some remedial courses. Child care and family services are common needs for these students that tribal colleges try to meet on their campuses. Lack of dependable transportation and available telephone services in isolated reservation areas also impact tribal students’ ability to attend regularly or to communicate with college officials when problems arise and they cannot attend classes.
To help overcome these economic and educational obstacles, tribal colleges offer their students opportunities for self-determination and academic and career success. This is done through an array of diverse, comprehensive, academic and technical course offerings; a culturally infused curriculum that incorporates native values, beliefs, and customs; and a variety of academic and student support services. Another important characteristic is that at least 30 percent of the faculty are Native American and Alaska Natives as compared to less than one percent of all faculty at all other public postsecondary institutions. Thus, students have native role models and mentors, some of whom are tribal elders, who bring cultural awareness, sensitivity, and specific curricular expertise to the classroom. As native faculty, they also have a greater understanding of students’ academic and personal situations.
Tribal colleges seek to prepare their students to succeed both inside and outside the reservation. In placing a significant value on the students’ culture and incorporating it into the college experience in a holistic manner, tribal colleges and universities are able to achieve higher retention and graduation rates for Native American students than mainstream institutions can. In 1994 tribal colleges awarded 69 percent of their associate’s degrees, 81 percent of the bachelor’s degrees, and 67 percent of the master’s degrees to Native American students. By comparison, only 0.9 percent of the associate’s degrees, 0.5 of the bachelor’s degrees, and 0.4 of the master’s degrees awarded by all other institutions were earned by Native American students that year.

The Artistry of Juggling « The Feminist Lattice
p>Editors Note: This is the fourth in a series of guest blog posts about the experiences and perspectives of women. Laurie A. Berry, a professional in university housing and residence life, and a new Ph.D. student, discusses what it takes for her to keep it all in balance.
The Artistry of Juggling
Juggling when done well is an art form. Masterfully keeping perfect rhythm using multiple objects that seemingly float up and over then into the juggler’s hands again can be mesmerizing to watch. When the objects juggled are not the same size, or as more and more objects are added and the juggler does not appear to miss a beat, my awe and amazement grows.
Juggling is the perfect metaphor for what many of us do with our personal life, careers and academic lives as well as the myriad of other interests we have. I struggle to be that artful juggler who can take on more and more objects with ease and keep the perfect rhythm and grace. Over the years I have learned to find a good balance with my professional and personal life. As I reflect on my own development as a juggler, I have always done my best when I had one large area and then several smaller areas to juggle. When I can define or order my roles into one major and several minor then I found that getting in a good rhythm as easier. Juggling was easy when I had a singular focus. When the smaller balls fell, as long as that large one was still in the air I felt successful. For example when I was in college as an undergraduate – completing my degree was my primary goal and everything else was secondary. Those were the easy days. I had a life plan mapped out to include getting a bachelor’s degree, followed a master’s degree and ultimately a PhD all by the time I was 27. Juggling was easy then.
Well, life has a way of changing your role as juggler – and it just gets harder. At times you have to make decisions to put all but one or two of those balls down at a time. It took 5 ½ years for me to get my bachelor’s degree, as I completed three quarters of a marketing degree as well as becoming certified to teach English in secondary schools before finding what would ultimately be my career in a part time job I took in the residence halls. Through a night clerk job I found a love for student affairs. After I graduated with my bachelor’s degree I decided to start a Student Personnel Services degree. I then met and married my husband, and three semesters later graduated with my master’s degree.
As I matured, I found balance in my personal life. I dropped the academic ball from my juggling to make room for the professional one. As I grew in my professional role, more balls began to come my way. It took me a while to get into the rhythm that worked for me, but I found it, and the juggling was on. I was cruising along thinking, “I have mastered this juggling act. I can keep personal and professional life balanced even when adding in other interests!” And as life would have it – more balls then floated my way: leadership in professional organizations, helping with elderly family members, taking time off to assist my husband with recovery from major surgery, working with my daughter’s ADD and cognitive issues as well my mental and physical health. My skills were continuously tested, but I managed to keep things floating.
Fast forward 20 years. At 44 years old, I am now beginning that PhD program. To say I am anxious and overwhelmed is an understatement. I have a goal of completing my PhD before I turn 50. I now had three larger balls to juggle: my personal life, my professional life, and my academic life. I have many smaller balls that represent my interests as well as my obligations, but I can’t let these three large ones fall.
What I have found is that through my support network, I can keep all of these priorities alive. I have a supportive family and friends. I am a part of an amazing cohort. I have already formed close bonds with these new classmates who no doubt will become a part of my extended family. I have the support of my supervisors and colleagues. And I have a confidante that I have shared much of this journey with to this point. But what motivates me the most is the knowledge that I am serving as a role model for my daughter. I can, by learning how to balance, juggle and prioritize, teach her that dreams are worth hanging on to, and goals can be achieved.
I am not sure how long it will take me to once again find that rhythm of a master juggler. I know there will be days when one or more of the balls hit the ground. When they fall, I will do what all good performers do. I will pick up the ball, dust it off and toss it back into the air confident that with enough practice, I will always find my rhythm and dazzle with my artistry.

Should I do a master degree in civil engineering in US or Germany …
Question by : Should I do a master degree in civil engineering in US or Germany?
I am a German national studying in the UAE (country in the middle east) for a Bachelors in Civil Engineering in an ABET accredited university and I’ll graduate next semester (Fall 2010) with a good GPA. Now I’m trying to decide what to do in my future and got really confused among these three choices:
First, few of my friends have started preparing for the GRE exam required for applying to US universities. I’m pretty good in english and math so that wouldn’t be a hassle but this still it got me thinking: What are the advantages of applying to a school in the US rather than Germany?
Then, I have the choice of studying in Germany; though I don’t have a good grip on the language because I’ve lived all my life in the UAE and never visited Deutschland to date. I’m more than willing to spend a couple of semesters on language. But I’m not really sure what a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited uni would be equivalent to in the German educational system and I don’t want to be doing another undergrad course after 4 years of school and a graduation ceremony!
Finally, (though not mentioned in the main question) I can apply for a masters degree in my current university (which would be similar to a degree coming from a US university albeit the location) and get a job as a Teaching Assistant and get my degree for free.
I was also wondering about financial sponsorship (or assistance) available for students both in the US(as an international student) and in Germany(as a German national).
I know my question seems vague but any useful information/guidance/assistance would be much appreciated!!
P.S.: forgot to mention, I’m also doing a minor in engineering management so I decided on doing an MBA later on. But I still haven’t decided between environmental and structural engneering for my masters though I’m really leaning towards environmental engineering. Plase advise me on this matter too!
Okay, for example:
US uni: Virginia tech – www.vt.edu/ (i know it’s top 10…)
German uni: Karsruhe institute of Technology – www.kit.edu/english/index.php
Current uni: www.aus.edu
Best answer:
Answer by Dong
sometimes degrees only work in the country you got it at (companies might not except a degree in another country)
and since you seem to be better at english, you might want to choose that
you should have named possible schools in each country because that makes a big difference
also, you should have put in possible futures like living in the US or living in your current country or getting a curtain job

Certificate Education » The World of Business Education …
If you find the world of business fascinating and inspiring, a degree in Business Administration might be just the thing for you. But what degrees are available? What is the best program for you? Here is a breakdown of all the business degrees currently available.
Business Diploma and Certificate Programs
A Business certificate is a six to twelve month program that provides training in business fundamentals. Earning this certificate may lead to promotional opportunities as well as entry-level employment in business, industry and non-profit organizations. Business students may choose to opt for general management courses or specialize in human resource management, finance, global leadership or marketing.
Business diploma and certificate programs offer aspiring business majors a chance to earn an undergraduate diploma or certificate in a short period of time. Coursework is often accelerated, allowing students to learn a great deal in a one or two semester time frame. Programs can usually be taken online or at an institution of higher learning, and can focus on anything from general business to accounting to some other specialization.
Associate’s Degree in Business Administration
An associate degree is an academic degree awarded by community colleges, junior colleges, business colleges and some bachelor’s degree-granting colleges and universities upon completion of a course of study usually lasting two years.
Associate degree programs are generally two-year programs offered by technical institutes or community colleges. They are designed to give students a general education in business, or to prepare university-bound students for the eventual completion of a bachelor’s degree in business. The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in business, the Associate of Business Administration (ABA), and the Associate of Arts in Business Administration (AABA) are typical degrees.
Bachelor of Business Administration
The Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) is a bachelor’s degree in business studies. In most universities, the degree is conferred upon a student after four years of full-time study (120 credit hours) in one or more areas of business concentrations. The BBA program usually includes general business courses and advanced courses for specific concentrations. BBA programs expose students to a variety of subjects: accounting, business law and ethics, economics, finance, management information systems, marketing, operations management, organizational behavior and management, statistics, and strategy.
Most Bachelor of Business Administration programs allow students to specialize or concentrate in a particular academic area as follows:
* Accounting
* Entrepreneurship
* Finance
* Management
* Management information system
* Marketing
* Operations management
Master of Business Administration
The Master of Business Administration (MBA) is a master’s degree in business administration, which attracts people from a wide range of academic disciplines.
The MBA is one of the most sought-after degree in business administration, and there are many different types of MBA programs. Here is an outline of the MBA programs currently available:
o Full-time MBA programs are the most common, normally lasting two years. Students enter with a reasonable amount of prior real-world work experience and take classes during weekdays like other university students.
o Accelerated MBA programs are a variation of full time programs, lasting 18 months or less, involving a higher course load.
o Part-time MBA programs normally hold classes on weekday evenings, after normal working hours. Part-time programs normally last three years or more. The students in these programs typically consist of working professionals, who take a light course load for a longer period of time until the graduation requirements are met.
o Executive MBA (EMBA) programs developed to meet the educational needs of managers and executives, allowing students to earn an MBA or another business-related graduate degree in two years or less while working full time. Participants come from every type and size of organization – profit, nonprofit, government — representing a variety of industries. EMBA students typically have a higher level of work experience, often 10 years or more, compared to other MBA students. In response to the increasing number of EMBA programs offered, The Executive MBA Council was formed in 1981 to advance executive education.
o Distance learning MBA programs hold classes off-campus, usually online.
Doctorate of Business Administration
The Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) is similar to a PhD. program, but unlike a traditional PhD., it is intended to equip you as a business executive with research tools, rather than train you as a professional researcher (there is also a more traditional PhD program available in business administration, but the focus on this degree is university research and teaching). With a DBA, you will acquire a combination of business and research skills for analyzing business and corporate operations. This unique perspective–as both a business manager and a business researcher–will make you invaluable in the corporate world.
Traditionally, the DBA program features a curriculum that focuses on practical business concepts and active research rather than a purely theoretical approach to research. The DBA is often referred to as a professional research doctorate. The DBA degree may have a specialization such as management science, technology management, organizational behavior, economics, or finance. Many business schools offer both DBA and Ph.D. programs in various fields. The DBA is sometimes virtually identical to the Ph.D. in Business Administration. However, a DBA tends to focus on contemporary and practical business issues as opposed to theoretical research, although some DBAs make significant contributions to both theory and practice.
This highly advanced business degree provides candidates with a mastery of business administration literature, and teaches how to apply this knowledge to current business environments. As the global information economy evolves, organizations are becoming increasingly complex, and innovative organizational models and practices have become crucial to successfully addressing this complexity. Consequently, leadership in this environment requires higher, more sophisticated levels of knowledge and skills. The DBA program is designed to serve this need by providing doctoral-level education to professional practitioners in business and management.
